How to share a shopping list between Android and iPhone
Updated
Create the list in Tickalot and post its link in any chat. Once the other person taps the link, you both have the same list. A tick on one phone reaches the other within a second or two, on Android and iPhone alike.
Where a chat list fails
A list typed into WhatsApp or Messages is only a copy. The one in the shop can't tick it. The one at home can't add the bread that just ran out. A second message later, it is unclear which list is current.
A shared list solves this. There is one list, and each phone shows it as it stands now.
Share a list
- Create the list. Open Tickalot, tap "New list", choose Shopping, then type or say the items: "milk, eggs and bread" adds three.
- Tap Share. Choose WhatsApp, Messages, email or any other app on the phone.
- Send the link. It reads
tickalot.web.app/l/followed by a long code. The code is the key to the list, so send it only to the people you want in. - The other person taps it. An Android phone with the app opens the app. An iPhone or a computer opens the list in the browser. Either one saves the list, so it stays on their home screen.
You both skip making an account and giving an email.
What each phone gets
| Android app | iPhone or computer browser | |
|---|---|---|
| Tick, add, change items | Yes | Yes |
| Works with a weak signal, sends ticks later | Yes | Yes |
| Voice input | Yes | Where the browser supports it |
| Notice when the other person adds an item | A notification and a voice | A voice, while the tab is open |
| Prices under each item | Coles and Woolworths | Woolworths |
On an iPhone, the Share button in Safari offers "Add to Home Screen". The list then opens from an icon, like an app.
A shop without signal
Each tick is saved on the phone first. Once the signal returns, the app sends the ticks without a tap. When you each tick different items while apart, both sets of ticks stay.
